Elk and geese share the fairways at the Lake Estes 9-Hole Golf Course, a short executive layout on Big Thompson Avenue just past the Visitor Center. The Big Thompson River runs through it, Lake Estes is just down the road, and mountains ring the whole thing.
Golf here is relaxed. It plays like a par-3 course, fees are reasonable and tee times are rarely hard to get, so it works for beginners and for anyone who wants nine holes without spending the whole morning. Fellow golfers tend to be easygoing, and practice facilities, golf carts and a pro shop are on site.
For some, the bigger draw is the 18-hole disc golf course on the same grounds, with discs sold in the shop and carts for rent. Give the elk room. They treat the place as theirs. Geese are the other regulars, and the grounds stay in decent shape despite them. The course is wheelchair accessible.
