Out on Highway 7, about six miles from downtown, Elkhorn Stables runs guided trail rides from a base at 9,100 feet, on the road toward Allenspark. The two-hour ride is the popular one, and private rides can be booked for families who want the trail to themselves. It's well outside town, so leave time for the drive.
The wranglers get as much credit as the scenery. Horses are matched to each rider, they're gentle and patient, and several are rescues. The pace is slow on purpose, which suits kids and nervous first-timers, and the mountain views open up as the trail climbs.
It's open year-round, so a winter ride is possible. Seasoned riders can ask for an advanced ride, and horse owners can book farrier work. Rides are by appointment, so book ahead in summer. Gift vouchers are sold online, and the confirmation email carries the details to read before you arrive.
