About
Kruger Rock is a summit with a big view of Meeker, the Divide and the Mummy Range. The trail is in Hermit Park, southeast of town, and it's one of the few real summits where your dog can come along. Leashed, though.
Kruger Rock is in Hermit Park Open Space, a Larimer County park about 2 miles southeast of Estes Park on the south side of Highway 36. The trail winds through ponderosa pine and scrambles to a summit of about 9,335 feet. Visit Estes Park calls it an intermediate hike. Published lengths vary by route, so check the Larimer County trail map at the gate. The trail is hiking only, with no bikes or horses.
Hermit Park requires an entrance permit, and the park is seasonal, so check larimer.gov for current hours and dates before you drive out. Dogs are welcome on a leash no longer than 10 feet and can't be left unattended. That's a real perk compared with the Park. I'd go in the morning, bring water, and expect a scramble near the top. Stay on the trail so the ponderosa roots survive another few hundred summers. This is a favorite for good reason.
