Next door to the Sugar Shack on Virginia Drive, right in the middle of downtown, Kim Sheumaker runs The Vortex. Kim has thirty years in hair, has worked under three master barbers, including the one at Hombre Barbershop here in town, and works as a licensed cosmetologist. Bryan Olesen of The Voice has sat in the chair.

Fades, tapers, buzz cuts, custom cuts, mullets, head shaves and kids' cuts make up the everyday work. The hot towel shave and the beard trim are the services that stand out, and the attention to detail shows in the line-ups. Beard conditioning and eyebrow trims round out the menu, and the room is relaxed.

Wedding parties are a specialty of sorts, with groom packages for the whole group. Walk-ins have long been part of the routine, but the shop has been moving toward appointments, so call or text ahead before showing up. The downtown spot makes it easy to pair with other errands.
