About

The chipmunks get almost as much attention as the view. Up top on Prospect Mountain they're part of the scene, and peanuts come up in the same breath. The cafe at the summit is called the Hungry Chipmunk, for good reason.

The ride itself takes about five minutes, a 2,630-foot trip from the base on Curry Drive to a summit at 8,708 feet that looks across to Longs Peak, the Park and the Continental Divide. No Park pass is needed. Once there, a trail lets people stretch their legs, and some make the short hike to the peak itself.

Tickets are booked online and reservations are required, so sort that out before showing up, especially in summer. The tram is wheelchair accessible and easy with kids, and a group can book a private car. Estes Park residents get their own ticket price. It runs through the warm months into fall, then shuts for the season.
