About

The flies get talked about more than anything else on these trips, which says something about the guides tying them on. Walk-and-wade days for wild trout on the streams and lakes of Rocky Mountain National Park are the core, along with local water around Estes.

Patience is the other theme. Beginners come away having learned to read water and cast, and the guides know the water well. They come across as kind and good teachers, the kind who explain why a fly works rather than just tying it on. Conventional tackle is welcome, not only fly rods, and trips run four to eight hours.

For something different there's a permitted private trout fishery near Denver, plus boat trips for wipers, bass and carp on Front Range and plains reservoirs, Horsetooth included, though some of that water is a real drive from Estes. The office is on West Riverside Drive by the Visitor Center.
