Four weeks is the standard stay at Cheley Colorado Camps, out Fish Creek Road about four miles from downtown. Two traditional sessions run each summer for boys and girls 9 to 17, who live in separate units by age, with names like Ski Hi, Chipeta and Trail's End. More than 1,200 campers come through each summer.
The days are hiking, horseback riding, backpacking, climbing, rafting, mountain biking and paddleboarding, with sports and crafts in between. Younger kids can try a four-night introductory camp first. Family Camp lets parents see the place from the inside, and the family-owned camp also runs Burn Camp, a Teen Summit and school retreats.
Parents talk less about the activities than about the other campers: a good crowd of kids, a supportive setting and lessons that seem to stick well into the college years. More than one family calls the tuition an investment, and says it like they mean it.
