Kruger Equestrian Campground

About

Larimer County's horse camp in Hermit Park Open Space, five sites tucked above town. If you travel with horses, this is a handy spot, and if you don't, you'll still hear the neighbors nickering at dusk.

Kruger Equestrian Campground is in Hermit Park Open Space, off US 36 just east of Estes Park, and has five numbered sites (K1 through K5). K5 is non-electric. The county's map shows restrooms, parking, and trail access, with a 10 mph limit and one-way traffic. Potable water is at the group pavilion parking area, and an RV dump station is at the park entrance. Larimer County Natural Resources runs it, and a daily or annual permit is required to enter the park.

Book ahead through the county, and read their horse trailer parking map before you roll in. Hermit Park is moose, bear, and elk country, so keep camp clean and don't leave food out. Quiet hours are 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., and alcohol stays at your campsite. If you're hiking, note that Kruger Rock Trail is hiking only, so no horses or bikes there, and check the county for where riding is allowed. Dogs stay leashed, ten feet at most. I wouldn't plan a winter trip without checking current closures.
