About
Deer Mountain is the summit I send friends to when they want a real peak without a punishing day. It starts high, at Deer Ridge Junction, and it gives you wide views without much drama. Moderate, steady, and a good first big hike if you're still adjusting to the altitude.
You start at Deer Ridge Junction, inside Rocky Mountain National Park, at about 8,930 feet. The NPS trail table lists 3.0 miles each way with roughly 1,080 feet of gain, so plan on a 6 mile round trip. It's a moderate climb. Steady uphill, a few switchbacks, and a summit with long views over the valley. Give yourself a half day.
It starts lower than most Park summits, so it holds less snow. The NPS says traction devices are smart in winter, especially after the first mile, and that snowshoes usually aren't needed. I'd still toss microspikes in the pack from late fall through spring. In summer you'll need a timed-entry reservation to be in the Park, so check nps.gov/romo before you drive up. Go early, carry more water than you think, and give wildlife room. Dogs stay home. Pets aren't allowed on any trail in the Park.
