About
This is the start of the long trail up to Twin Sisters Peak, off Highway 7 near Lily Lake. It's a real hike, with a rock scramble at the top and views that make the work worth it. Go early, and leave the dog at home.
Take Highway 7 south from town about six miles to Lily Lake, then follow a short gravel road to the trailhead. Parking is limited there, with overflow at the Lily Lake visitor center. The trailhead sits around 8,880 feet and the summit around 11,400, so you climb the whole way. The trail switchbacks through lodgepole pine before it opens up into alpine terrain, and the Forest Service calls it moderately strenuous. The last bit is a scramble over rocks. Plan on most of a day, not a quick morning.
Honestly, I'd start at first light. Afternoon weather comes in fast up high, and you don't want to be on those rocks when it does. Bring layers, because the top is always colder and windier than the parking lot suggests. Dogs aren't allowed on this one, since the trailhead and much of the route are on national park land, so don't make the drive with a leash in hand. If you want a trail for the dog on this side of town, ask the Forest Service or check the NPS pet page for options. Check the NPS site for any entry requirements before you go.
