Summer here looks like camp for the whole family: mini golf, archery, roller skating, axe throwing, disc golf and horseback riding, and plenty of hiking. Winter swaps in ice skating. Day camp is open to guests' kids in summer, which frees up a morning or two for the adults.

The YMCA's Estes Park campus is on Tunnel Road, about two miles from the Beaver Meadows entrance to the Park, and it holds rooms and a lot of cabins. The cabins are what most families book. The Rustic Cafe and the General Store sit on the grounds near guest registration, and the Maude Jellison Library is a short walk away.

It also runs weddings, conferences, school groups, environmental education programs and a preschool, so expect company. Rooms come with mountain or river views, and elk show up on the grounds. Dining is on site, which saves a drive into town at the end of a long day.
