Cabinets and countertops are work where the shop matters, because someone has to measure, build and install in a house that may sit well outside town. Three of the 8 shops listed are based in Estes Park, and the other five work from Fort Collins, Loveland and Boulder.
In an older mountain house the walls are never square. Pick the shop that sends someone to measure in person, and ask who handles the install before you pay a deposit.
Based in Estes Park
Carpet Masters, Park Flooring and All About Floors now go by one name, and the Estes store is on Dunraven Street next to Mountain Valley Plumbing and Heating. It's family run, with local flooring people on the floor and installation, repairs and a guarantee on the work.
New kitchens are the jobs Highland Cabinetry & Design gets remembered for, and careful detail is the reason. The studio designs, fabricates and installs kitchen and bath cabinets, storage and custom countertops, with free estimates on both.
The walnut bar tops at the Stanley's Onyx Whiskey Bar and at Bird and Jim came out of this shop. Kent Hamel, Mark Rodgers and Josh Weaver spent more than 25 years doing interior trim for custom homes under Hamel Construction before they opened a showroom of their own on Big Thompson Avenue, next to Lake View Storage on the way out toward the lake.
Serves Estes Park from the Front Range
Keep the cabinets, change the finish. That's the whole idea behind this Fort Collins refinishing company, which reaches Estes Park from the Front Range.
Popcorn ceilings, a tired deck, a whole exterior baked by mountain sun: That 1 Painter's Boulder crew takes on all of it, along with cabinets, limewash and brick. The company is based in Boulder and comes up to Estes for jobs.
When skis, bikes and camping gear have taken over the garage, this Boulder, Erie and Fort Collins franchise redoes the whole room: epoxy or polyaspartic floor coatings, custom cabinets, wall systems and overhead racks. The floors and cabinets are the work people talk about most, along with the design stage, which includes 3D renderings before anything is built.
Doors come up more than anything else when people talk about Infinite Finishes, followed closely by sanding, staining and a fussy eye for detail. The Loveland shop does residential woodworking and finishing, and its main business is kitchen cabinets: refinishing sets that are structurally fine, replacing them, building custom ones and installing them.
A mountain-house mudroom has to hold boots, coats, skis and dog leashes at once, and that's one of the rooms The Tailored Closet of Boulder, Erie & Fort Collins redesigns. The franchise, run by David and Sheri Alvarado, is based down on the Front Range and comes up to Estes for jobs.

Front Range options fill other needs. Summit Cabinet Coatings in Fort Collins refinishes and refaces existing cabinets in a spray facility instead of the homeowner's garage. Infinite Finishes Colorado in Loveland builds and refinishes kitchen cabinets and makes handrails and stair treads. Two companies serving Boulder, Erie and Fort Collins do garage storage and custom closets. That 1 Painter Boulder also lists cabinet refinishing.
Two of the 8 list free estimates and 2 list commercial work. One thing to settle early is whether you want new cabinets or a refinish, because refinishing keeps the boxes on the wall, which Summit describes as a fraction of the cost and mess of tearing them out. Ask any shop about lead times and whether installation is included, and confirm that the Front Range shops will come to your address.
