It started as a picnic-basket food truck on Route 36, parked just before Tiny Town Miniature Golf, and people kept asking where they could sit down. Now the Kissing Moose Cafe cooks breakfast and lunch inside Expedition Lodge on North Lake Avenue, a mile and a half from downtown.

The biscuits and gravy and the mac and cheese are the two orders that keep coming up, followed closely by the cheesecake, when there is any. Green chile goes on nearly everything, including the smothered burrito, and the chicken salad wrap is the lunch to carry up a trail. Coffee is French press. Omelets run from veggie to loaded to Southwest.

It opens early enough for a sunrise start toward the Park, and online ordering means you can grab a bag and keep driving. A few picnic tables outside, takeout, a kids' menu, friendly owners at the window and prices on the low side. Catering is on offer too.
