Three miles south of downtown on South St. Vrain, inside the grounds of Taharaa Mountain Lodge and less than a mile from Mary's Lake, Twin Owls is where people go when dinner is the occasion. Bison is the order, the bison filet especially, with prime rib, the elk kabob and bacon-wrapped scallops close behind. The carrot cake gets its own mention.

The room has a stone hearth and log beams, it runs quiet, and the mountain view at sunset is part of the bill. Some nights bring live music. It only serves dinner and the prices run high, so book ahead, especially in summer and around holidays. Lodge guests can walk over.
