A short walk off MacGregor Avenue, next to the Knoll-Willows Open Space, the Birch Ruins sit on a knoll with one of the better looks at downtown. The path is easy, short enough that kids make it up without complaint, and there's nothing to pay.
The ruins themselves are modest. The view is the reason: the town spread out below and the mountains behind it. Pair it with an afternoon on Elkhorn, since it's barely a tenth of a mile from the main intersection, and it makes a good first stop for anyone who wants to get the lay of the valley before heading into the Park. Bring a camera.
