About
Spruce Lake is the side trip off the Fern Lake trail that most people skip, which is exactly why you might want it. It's a long, steady day with a rugged last stretch, and you'll likely have more company from squirrels than hikers.
Start at the Fern Lake trailhead in the Moraine Park area. The route follows the Big Thompson River past The Pool and Fern Falls, then a spur trail branches off and climbs roughly eight tenths of a mile to the lake. Plan on about 9 to 9.6 miles round trip, depending on the source, and well over 1,500 feet of climbing. It's rocky and steep in places. Everything here is inside Rocky Mountain National Park, so dogs aren't allowed.
I'd pick Spruce Lake when Fern Lake feels too busy and your legs are willing. Parking at the trailhead is limited, so the shuttle from the Park and Ride is the smart move, and timed entry rules apply in summer, so check the NPS site. Go early, carry plenty of water, and keep an eye on the weather. The area burned in the 2020 East Troublesome Fire, so shade can be patchy. Spring through fall is the window, with snow possible on the spur.
