On East Elkhorn, a few steps from Bond Park and right next to Purple Mountain Taffy Company, Laura's has been cooking candy in copper kettles with wooden paddles for decades. Fudge and taffy come up about equally when people talk about the place, with caramel apples close behind. Popcorn and Bret Bars fill the shelves too. The ice cream scoops run large, and the counter staff are friendly and quick.

The toffee and fudge ship, which helps when the neighbor's gift only comes to mind once you're home. And unlike a lot of downtown, the shop stays open all year, so it's there in January too. Eat the caramel apple on the walk, not in the car.
