About

Rainbow trout on a first-timer's line is the usual outcome of a day out with Estes Angler. The shop on West Riverside, about a third of a mile from downtown, guides fly and spin trips in Rocky Mountain National Park, on the Big Thompson and on Lake Estes, where charters troll for trout from a boat. Trips run four, six or eight hours.

The guides get the credit. Patient with beginners, energetic, good at putting people on fish. Wading trips are an option for anyone who wants to stand in the river. But what people remember first is how easily the whole trip came together.

The shop sells gear, bait and flies and rents rods and clothing, so a family can show up with nothing and still fish. Family fishing lessons are part of the lineup, and the shop posts a fishing report on current conditions. Book ahead of the summer rush, when guides fill up.
