Kirks Flyshop
If you've never cast a fly rod, this is the shop to walk into. It sits on East Elkhorn next to Kirks Mountain Adventures and sells flies, gear and fly fishing classes alongside the guided trips.
The Park next door is why outdoor shops matter here. A clear morning can turn into a cold afternoon, and the trails climb from a town that already sits high. Fourteen shops and outfitters are listed, all in the valley, and several rent gear and run guided trips as well as sell it.
Buy boots and layers. Rent the rest. And talk to whoever's behind the counter, because they know what the trails look like this week, not last summer. Half the good advice in this town gets handed out at a gear shop register.
Downtown
If you've never cast a fly rod, this is the shop to walk into. It sits on East Elkhorn next to Kirks Mountain Adventures and sells flies, gear and fly fishing classes alongside the guided trips.

Every spring Brownfield's opens with an entirely new stock, and every fall it closes in early November with a rummage sale that locals line up for. In between, it's the shop on East Elkhorn, next to The White Orchid and a few doors from Poppy's Pizza & Grill, where a good share of visitors pick up the hoodie.
Hiking boots, fitted by people who know what they are doing, are the reason to stop at Plum Creek Shoe Station. The staff take the time to measure and match a foot to a boot, and that is what people remember.

In the shoulder seasons, when the trails go icy, Outdoor World is where people rent microspikes, crampons and trekking poles for the day instead of buying a set they will use twice. The shop is on East Elkhorn near the Riverwalk, a few doors from Macdonald Book Shop and The Phat Bear.

Rainbow trout on a first-timer's line is the usual outcome of a day out with Estes Angler. The shop on West Riverside, about a third of a mile from downtown, guides fly and spin trips in Rocky Mountain National Park, on the Big Thompson and on Lake Estes, where charters troll for trout from a boat.

Hundreds of knives fill the cases at BLADES, priced anywhere from $15 to $2,500, on East Elkhorn across from Bond Park. It's an authorized Pro-Tech dealer, carries katanas and swords, and stocks officially licensed Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones pieces.

On East Elkhorn, in the same building as Kirks Flyshop and a few steps from Funky Moose, this outfitter books guided trips into Rocky Mountain National Park and sells the gear to go with them. Day hikes, backpacking, Longs Peak climbs, snowshoe outings, fly fishing and llama treks all start from here.

The store dates to 1914 and has shipped mail orders worldwide since 1949. Rocky Mountain Connection sits on East Elkhorn next to the Elkins Distilling tasting room, and the racks run to Levi's, Columbia, Dickies, Dockers, Minnetonka and Whistle Creek.
Listed as a bicycle shop in Estes Park, STRADAPISTA LLC has no published street address beyond a unit number, no posted hours and no service list. Get in touch directly before planning a ride or a repair around it.
Around the valley
The rental department is why most visitors end up at this shop on Big Thompson Avenue, out toward Lake Estes. Camping and climbing gear, bikes, snowshoes, downhill skis, snowboards and sleds all go out the door here, and snow boots come up constantly.

Out on Moraine Avenue, on the road toward Beaver Meadows and next door to Bandit's Bikes, this is the shop to stop in before the Park, not after. Fly fishing is the heart of it: flies tied for the local water, fishing licenses, and straight advice on where to go.

The gift shop is one piece of a bigger stop. Rocky Mountain Gateway sits about a tenth of a mile from the Fall River entrance, next to the Trailhead Restaurant and the Fall River Visitor Center, and it was the first joint venture between a private company and the National Park Service.

Seven thousand square feet of souvenirs, apparel, toys, stuffed animals, outdoor gear and home decor sit out Moraine Avenue, about a mile from the Park entrance. The size is the point.
Drivetrains and cassettes are the repairs that come up most at Bandit's Bikes, a road, mountain and e-bike shop on Moraine Avenue next to Scots Sporting Goods, about a mile and a half from downtown toward the Park. It sells bikes too, and the stated aim is to build up cycling in the valley.

Fishing has its own corner of the list. Kirks Flyshop has served the area since 2002 and runs guided trips from the shop. Estes Angler guides fly and spin anglers in the Park, on the Big Thompson and on Lake Estes, and Scot's Sporting Goods hand ties flies for the waters around town.
For gear, look at who rents. Estes Park Mountain Shop sits at the Park entrance, has been in business since 1986 and runs a large rental department. Outdoor World and Scot's Sporting Goods list rentals too. Ask what should be reserved ahead in summer and what you can pick up the same day.
Guided trips cover more than fishing. Kirks Mountain Adventures leads day hikes, snowshoe trips, Longs Peak climbs and llama treks. Ten of the 14 are marked open Sunday, Brownfield's closes in early November, and many Estes Park shops cut hours in winter, so call before you count on a shop being open. Weather in the mountains can change plans fast, so ask each outfitter about its policy if a trip is cancelled for conditions.
