DVD players in the rooms, a shelf of board games and free popcorn. Murphy's Resort runs on an old-fashioned idea of a family motel night and doesn't pretend otherwise. The rooms are dated, but the beds are comfortable and the hot tub is the thing everyone ends up in.
It's on Big Thompson Avenue about a mile and a half east of downtown, a short walk from the Lake Estes Marina, and elk turn up on the property regularly. Breakfast and parking are free, a seasonal shuttle runs, and the outdoor pool is heated. Fire pits close out the evening, and La Cabaña Mexican Grill is a few steps away if nobody wants to drive.
