About

About a mile east of downtown on Big Thompson Avenue, the Appenzell is styled after Swiss mountain lodging and set back from the busier riverfront strip. Check-in happens next door at its sister property, Estes Mountain Inn, where the lobby is newer and roomier, with seating inside and out.

The outdoor hot tub stays open all year and is the thing guests come back to, especially with snow falling. An indoor pool covers bad-weather days, with a seasonal heated outdoor pool, a sauna, table tennis, fire pits, grills and nightly s'mores. Breakfast is included, and the mattresses lean firm.

Many rooms have kitchenettes or full kitchens, and some add fireplaces and jetted tubs. Sizes run from petite kings to two-bedroom suites and a 1,500-square-foot condo, so groups fit, and every unit has its own name and layout, from Tundra and Eiger to Glacier Basin. A few units are basement or no-view rooms, worth checking before you book.
