Cabins are the whole point at Valhalla: simple wood ones with kitchens, decks and barbecues, several with fireplaces, all kept clean, and some roomy enough for a family that likes elbow room. The resort is up Eagle Cliff Road, a couple of miles from downtown and closer still to the Beaver Meadows entrance, which makes the Park an easy morning drive.

Between hikes there is mini golf, ping pong, a hot tub and an outdoor pool that opens in the warm months. Wildlife wanders through, and the setting feels well removed from Elkhorn's summer traffic. Stock the kitchen in town before heading up, since cooking in is half the appeal.
