Down Big Thompson Canyon Road, about two and a half miles from downtown, six cottages sit along the Big Thompson River. Guests have been coming here since 1924.
The river is the whole point. It is what people mention first, along with how clean the cottages are, and fishing starts a few steps from the back door. Fire pits by the water, charcoal and gas grills, horseshoes, a playground and a communal hot tub for adults fill out the grounds. Elk and deer wander through, and now and then a fox or a bear.
Kitchenettes are simple, with dishes, a coffee maker and a microwave. Most have a two-burner cooktop, and Cottage #16 has a full oven for anyone planning real meals. The Johnson family has run it since 1993. It is seasonal, closed in winter, so book the summer and fall weeks early. Games can be borrowed from the office for the kids.
