About

If the sound of the river is the point of the trip, this is the place. Ponderosa Lodge sits on the banks of Fall River, down a one-lane drive off Fall River Road, a little under two miles west of downtown. The river view is what people bring up first, and the hot tub second.

Rooms, suites and cabins are mountain-style, with fireplaces, balconies and kitchenettes in the mix. Beds are comfortable, and the rooms are small and warm rather than grand. There are barbecue grills and a fire pit, and fishing right on the property. In season, colored lights come on across the grounds at night, a lodge tradition that goes back a long way.

Fall River Road is the straight shot west to the Park's Fall River entrance, so mornings start close to the trail. The staff are free with local advice, so ask them where to eat before going looking.
